In the 19th century, Philadelphia became a major industrial center and railroad hub that grew from an influx of European immigrants. San Francisco was founded on June 29, 1776. Soon thereafter, the California Gold Rush of 1849 brought rapid growth, making it the largest city on the West Coast at the time. Now the cultural, commercial, and financial center of Northern California as well as a popular tourist destination, San Francisco is known for its cool summers, fog, steep rolling hills, eclectic mix of architecture and landmarks, including the Golden Gate Bridge, cable cars, the former Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary, Fisherman's Wharf and its Chinatown district. Mission Viejo is located in the heart of the beautiful Saddleback Valley in Orange County, less than 50 miles from Los Angeles. It is one of the largest master-planned communities in the U.S.; its name comes from Rancho Mission Viejo, a large Spanish land grant from which the city was founded. Perhaps its most interesting historical fact is that it was purchased by John Forster, an Englishman who became a Mexican citizen and who was nicknamed “Don Juan.”
