As the largest inland metropolitan zone in the United States, the area serves the economic and cultural hub of the North Texas region. In 2016, the metroplex rose to the number one spot in the nation in population growth, and the metropolitan economy surpassed Houston to become the fourth-largest in the nation. With a 2019 GDP of just over $613.4 billion in 2019, the area's economy is ranked the 10th largest in the world.
